Human-readable rationale:
“Your application was declined because your current debt is significantly higher than what we usually approve for your income level, and your last three payments were late. If you reduce your debt or improve your payment history, you may qualify in the future.”
Same decision, completely different impact.
Good rationales should be:
- Short and specific (no generic boilerplate).
- Focused on factors the person can actually influence.
- Clearly tied to whatever data you used.
- Paired with a next step: appeal, provide more documentation, or speak with a human.

“For any AI that makes or influences customer decisions, we need a plain-language rationale returned with the result.”

How to Document and Defend AI-Assisted Decisions
Now, let’s talk about the bad day scenario.
Someone challenges a decision. A regulator or lawyer asks you to explain it. If you can’t reconstruct what happened, you’re relying on memory and vibes. That’s not where you want to be.
You want an evidence trail.
What You Need to Log
Treat AI decisions like financial transactions — log the important bits.
For each AI-assisted decision, aim to capture:
