Buyers no longer accept “we do security” as an answer. They’re asking how security is implemented, whether it maps to recognizable frameworks, and if it is robust enough to satisfy insurers, auditors, and regulators when ransomware hits. This article walks through how to design a ransomware-ready stack that you can both operate and prove — so it becomes a core, high-margin MSP offering rather than a fuzzy promise.
The new baseline: ransomware-ready or out
For many customers, especially those with insurance or regulatory exposure, “ransomware readiness” is an explicit requirement baked into questionnaires and procurement processes. They want evidence of prevention, detection, response, and recovery — not just AV and backups.
For MSPs, this means security has to be expressed as a structured program aligned to frameworks (NIST CSF, CIS, ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, etc.) rather than a loose collection of tools. The differentiator isn’t having EDR or MFA; it’s being able to show how those controls combine into a coherent, testable ransomware playbook.
Step 1: Pick a control spine
Before you worry about acronyms on slide decks, pick one “spine” framework to standardize around. For most MSPs, that’s:
NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), or
CIS Controls (v8), or
An ISO 27001-based internal control set if you already live in ISO land.
This framework becomes your reference model for everything: service design, QBRs, proposals, playbooks, and evidence.
Map the ransomware lifecycle into that spine:
Prevent: identity, endpoint, email, patching, macro controls, user hardening
Detect: logging, alerting, behavioral detection, anomaly monitoring
Respond: incident response plan, roles, runbooks, communications
Recover: backup, DR, restore testing, business continuity

Step 3: Design the ransomware-ready stack
A. Prevention: stop the easy wins
Tie these to your control spine and bake them into cybersecurity best practices:
Identity & access
MFA mandatory for all admin and remote access
Least privilege with separate admin accounts
Conditional access for high-risk scenarios (geo, device posture)
Endpoint and email
EDR or next-gen AV across all managed endpoints
Managed email security (phishing, malware, spoofing protection)
Application control / allow-listing where feasible
Standardized patch management with defined SLAs
Network and SaaS
DNS filtering for known malicious domains
Segmentation for critical systems where possible
Basic SaaS posture checks (sharing, external access, weaker accounts)
The key: these are not “add-ons.” They are your minimum viable security baseline if a client wants you to stand next to them when insurers or regulators ask, “What did you have in place?”
B. Detection: know when ransomware is brewing
Ransomware failures often start with blind spots. For MSPs that means:
Centralized logging:
Endpoint events, identity logs, core server logs, and key SaaS audit events forwarded into a SIEM/XDR or equivalent.
Defined use cases:
Detection rules for typical ransomware precursors: mass file changes, unusual admin behavior, new scheduled tasks, strange Powershell scripts, unusual VPN patterns, etc.
Response hooks:
Clear on-call processes, defined triage paths, and SLAs for suspicious activity.
You do not need a SOC that rivals a central bank, but you do need a defensible answer when someone asks, “How would you have seen this coming?”

What the MSP does, what the client owns, which third parties might be involved (forensics, IR, legal).
Playbooks
Containment: isolating endpoints, disabling accounts, blocking known indicators, pausing risky services.
Communication: who talks to whom, in what order, including insurer, regulator, and law enforcement touchpoints as needed.
Evidence handling: preserving logs, snapshots, chain of custody.
Even a lean MSP can create a lightweight incident response plan with a few core playbooks. The impact is outsized when insurers or auditors ask, “Show us your documented process.”
D. Recovery: prove you can get them back
Ransomware-ready means assuming compromise is possible and planning to recover without paying:
Backup architecture
Immutable backups or write-once copies (object lock, snapshots, etc.).
Separation between production access and backup administration.
At least one copy that ransomware can’t trivially reach (offline/air-gapped or isolated).
Recovery testing
Regular, documented restore tests—both file-level and workload-level.
Defined RPO/RTO targets, communicated and agreed with clients.
This is where you convert “we do backups” into “we have a tested recovery program,” which matters enormously to insurers and auditors.
Step 4: Turn controls into evidence
Operating controls is only half the work. The other half is being able to prove it:

Collect these periodically and store them in a way you can quickly assemble for:

Customer due diligence or board reports
The MSP that can hand over a cohesive evidence packet beats the one scrambling screenshots at the last minute.
Step 5: Sell “ransomware-ready compliance” as a product
This isn’t just about risk reduction; it’s a revenue strategy.
A. Build tiers that reflect reality
Example:
Core Ransomware-Ready
Baseline: MFA, EDR, managed backups with tested restores, IR plan inclusion, basic logging.
Advanced
Adds SIEM/XDR, 24/7 response, stronger segmentation, more frequent testing, richer reporting.
Regulated/Enterprise
Adds custom framework mapping, tailored evidence packs, tabletop exercises, and coordination with internal GRC/legal.
Each tier should have clear:
Included controls
Framework alignments
Evidence expectations
B. Price for risk and complexity
You’re absorbing risk when you anchor your brand to “ransomware-ready.” Price accordingly:
Make the baseline non-negotiable; if a client wants to strip out key controls, they either move to a limited-support model or become ineligible for your full-stack security offering.
Align pricing with the cost of tooling, staff time for IR and testing, and the value of compliance support for clients (e.g., “this helps you keep your insurance and pass audits”).
C. Update your messaging
Move from:
“We do security” and “we include antivirus and backups”
To:
“Ransomware-ready by default, aligned with [framework]”
“Designed to satisfy typical cyber insurance and audit requirements”
“We can show you how your controls line up against ransomware playbooks”
Bring simple visuals to QBRs: framework mapping, heatmaps, and before/after roadmaps.
Step 6: Avoid the common traps
As you formalize this, watch for these pitfalls:
Overpromising outcomes
Do not guarantee “you will never get hit” or “you are compliant” in absolute terms. (Compliance is an ongoing journey!)
Position your offering as maximizing prevention and recovery capability and meeting defined control requirements.
Weak internal security
Ransomware-ready for clients means nothing if your PSA/RMM, backup console, or admin accounts are soft targets.
Apply the same controls internally (MFA, least privilege, logging, IR plan) that you insist on for customers.
Evidence drift
If nobody owns evidence collection and review, reports will be stale or missing when you need them.
Assign responsibility and build it into your operational rhythm (monthly/quarterly cycles).
Step 7: Roadmap your transition

Stand up a minimum ransomware baseline (MFA, EDR, stronger backups, basic IR plan).

Formalize stack standards and enforce them for new customers.

Expand into broader compliance-as-a-service, using the ransomware-ready stack as your anchor.
Done right, “ransomware-ready compliance” becomes your new normal — a language that resonates with boards and insurers, a stack that your techs can operate, and a differentiator that sets you apart from MSPs still saying “we do security” with nothing to back it up.
